For the 2022 edition of Art Collaboration Kyoto, Galerie Quynh is hosted by Tokyo-based Gallery 38 to present works by two established Vietnamese artists Trong Gia Nguyen (b.1971, Saigon) and Le Thua Tien (b.1964, Hue).
Recreating a quintessential window grate from colonial-era Saigon that depicts the remnants of multiple sunrises, Trong Gia Nguyen’s sculpture Three Sunrises (2017) serves as a relic – an overlooked object with an ability to house slippery details that history would leave out. In Library (Anthology for Beginners) (2007 – ongoing), through the act of copying word by word singular chapters or the complete text of various literary works on individual rice kernels, Trong Gia Nguyen reframes the notion of the library as a repository of knowledge, in particular how books accumulate and disseminate information and ideas.
Reinventing Vietnamese traditional crafts, Le Thua Tien’s lacquer sculptures Reflection I (2017) and II (2018) offer a space for self-inquiry and contemplation of a heritage that is on the verge of vanishing.
As part of the public program curated by Jam Acuzar, we are pleased to present six new textile works by artist Vo Tran Chau.
